Financial Education Program Development of Online Financial Education Program

ree

This study aimed to develop an online financial education program for preschool and elementary school students to nurture financial literacy. For this purpose, the authors adopted a reading-based methodology and developed educational materials for learners, including workbooks and activity kits related to each storybook. Moreover, synchronous online classes with quizzes, discussions, and activities were designed based on a storybook. The implication of this study is to propose the usefulness of a reading-based methodology in financial education and an online education model that supports financial education at home.

Based on the program category set, 20 books that students could access with curiosity were selected from the books collected during the Preparation Phase. Two PhDs in educational technology and one expert in economic and financial education participated in selecting the books.

  1. SQ3R Workbook & Guidebook for parents

ree

SQ3R (Robinson, 1941) is a proven reading comprehension strategy that helps students understand and retain key ideas from books. Based on the psychology of learning and memory, it guides readers through five stages—Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. Using this approach, we developed student workbooks to support deeper comprehension and long-term retention of financial concepts.

SQ3R Workbook (Sample)

The SQ3R workbooks, which students and parents could use after reading the books, were also designed. Since the workbook was to be used with students and parents before participating in synchronous online classes, a guidebook for parents was also designed

  1. Activity Kit

Activity kits were created based on key financial topics from the books and sent to students each month. After each class, students made the kits with their teachers. To support families who couldn’t join online classes, printable kits and video guides were also provided for home use.

  1. Tutorial Video

Activity Kit Tutorial Videos were created for all kits, showing how to assemble each home-delivered activity kit and how to use them effectively with family members at home.
